New Life Church | Abbotsford, BCHOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING AT NEW LIFE?
I joined the staff in a full time position on February 12, 2001. In September 2006, I went to half time and then took almost a year off starting November 2008 and returned on a half time basis in October 2009.

WHAT TYPE OF EDUCATION/TRAINING HAVE YOU HAD?
I obtained my bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Calvin College back in 1976. I had planned to go into accounting; however, I spent the next 23 years working in Information Technology: programming, technical support and management; along with a two year interlude in Marketing Operations and Forecasting.

What other experiences have you had that have had an impact on you and who you are? Well, there have been a few and most of them while volunteering: vocalist on a worship team, Hands & Voices, for over 16 years; worship coordinator for some 7 years; treasurer for several churches and for a Christian School; clerk (secretary) of church councils; teaching the Good Sense financial stewardship course about 9 or 10 times (I lost track) and being personally challenged every time…..

What is your favourite part of the job? Helping to ensure that there are sufficient resources for the ministry of New Life to happen through the work of staff and lay leadership and volunteers – we have been wonderfully blessed. When I first came on staff, a significant part of it was to help with the expansion – well, that took a while to come to fruition (although we did complete the parking lot back in 2002-2003); however, we are just about done and it has been a great experience and blessing!

What do you hope to accomplish in your role? Well, probably a lot more than is practical – but at a minimum to always be at a point where the amount of financial resources that is entrusted to New Life does not prevent us from doing the work that the Lord intended us to do – which doesn’t always mean that we need more money…

Who are your immediate family members? Linda, my wife of almost 40 years (in June 2011); Lisa and her husband, Shawn, and their 5 kids (4 boys, 1 girl); Kim and her husband, Mike, and their 3 kids (2 boys and 1 girl); Michelle and her husband, Ed, and their 4 girls; Jason and his wife, Kasie, and their son; and Tyler and Kristen (just recently married – so we are empty-nesters for the first time in 37.5 years!). So when we all get together, there are 25 of us – it’s wonderful!

What do you like to do in your spare time? I do have a few hours when I like to read, sing with H&V, some skiing (never enough) and games; along with time spent with family.

What is one thing about you that most people don’t know? I’ll mention two: when I was about 4 and in church one Sunday, I recall my mom gently suggesting that I shouldn’t sing so loud (probably singing the wrong words at the top of my lungs); and at about the same age, in pursuit of knowledge, I set our barn on fire – my two siblings and I got out okay, along with all the cattle. I still haven’t learned to tone down when singing, but I have not intentionally set another fire since the age of 4 that went out of control – I think I learned the more important lesson...
